The wise woman builds her house, but with her own hands the foolish one tears hers down. Proverbs 14:1 NIV
This is one verse I thought I understood.
There were women who tore down their own houses and there were women who built theirs. Of course I was one of the women who builds her house. Then there was the red dress incident.
[Tweet “Then there was the red dress incident.”]
Dan had been working very long hours and we hadn’t had much time together. I decided a special dinner was what we needed. Since money was tight, I decided to do it at home on an evening when he said he would be home early.
I plotted and planned, keeping it a secret but finding it difficult to hide my excitement.
I would make barbecued ribs, his favorite. I would have candles, my favorite. And I would wear the red dress, his very favorite.
The day finally arrived and everything was perfect. Except for one thing. The time Dan was supposed to be home came and went and he was nowhere to be seen.
I spent the next two hours changing clothes. Yes, changing clothes.
I would get angry because he apparently totally forgot about his promise to be home early and change from my red dress to my jeans.
Then I would decide he should be home any minute and quickly change my mind and put the red dress back on. Do you know how many times you can change clothes in two hours?

Through God’s grace, not mine, I ended up in the red dress when I heard his car pull into the driveway.
I raced to the door to meet him. He looked so weary. He smiled slightly when he saw me, and said, “This is the best thing that has happened to me all day.”
Thanks to the Lord, we had our special evening and our special dinner. I discovered that we all choose many times a day if we will build our house or tear it down.

When you have a choice to make, stop and think: Will it build my house up or will I be tearing it down with my own hands?
How are you going to be the best thing that happens to your husband today?

Oh Phyllis, I love this reminder! We have the CHOICE to tear our home down or raise it up. I will CHOOSE to raise it up! ♥

Great reminder! We can so often boil inside and explode before we even know the truth of what happened. Especially with our husbands. Thank for sharing!

Isn’t that the truth! Thanks for stopping by Lindsey.

I want to be this for my husband. He too is working long hours. We had something planned for this evening with our family, and it fell through. This post came at a very good time….I need to figure out a way I can still be the best thing that happened to him today. <3 Thank you!!

I’ll pray you come up with just the right thing Sharon.

This is so relatable, Phyllis. How good God was to you and your husband, to allow His grace to trump your feelings of irritation toward your husband. Thank you for your example of a woman who seeks after the Lord, and who intentionally builds her house. I’m glad you shared this with us at Grace & Truth!

I’m glad you could relate. I shared this story at a wedding shower and think it was appreciated. Remembering it helps me to stop and think before I make rash decisions.

Hi Phyllis -Loved the red dress incident – especially how you tied in ‘being the best thing that happened to your husband’ and ‘building your house’. Very good lesson!

Thanks Belinda. I’m still learning that lesson.
