Where Two or Three are Gathered

Does your family gather together in Jesus’ name? Watchman Nee’s quote tells how important and valuable this can be. Just think... when we gather in Jesus’ name, He is there in our midst! Right there in our living room, our kitchen, or our bedroom.
“For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” Matthew 18:20

“The preceding verse has given a wonderful promise of answered prayer, but the promise is conditional. There must be at least two, and they must be in agreement. Why is their prayer answered? Because these two or three “are gathered together in my name.” That is, they do not just meet; they are gathered (passive voice). We see the difference, for to be gathered is not merely to go of ourselves; it is to be moved by the Spirit of God. And they come, not on their own affairs, but having a single common concern for his. It is this that unites them in his name. And when this is so, Jesus says, “I am in the midst of them,” leading, revealing, enlightening. Praise God, that is not a promise; it is a statement of fact!” Watchman Nee

I once knew someone who wanted to borrow money from me so he could go to a foreign country to say a special prayer to Buddha. I remember thinking, I can pray to the Lord in my bathroom. I don’t have to make special trips to foreign countries so He can hear me. I was a rather new Christian then, and thinking about this was life-changing for me.

David goes so far as to ask the Lord to “bow down His ear to him”.

“Bow down thine ear to me; deliver me speedily: be thou my strong rock, for an house of defense to save me.” Psalm 31:2

“Bow down thine ear, O Lord, hear me: for I [am] poor and needy.” Psalm 86:1

Amazing! Asking the God of the universe to bow down and listen to him. I get the picture of an adult bending over to listen to the words of a little child.

Yet this is exactly what our God encourages us to do.

“Come unto me, all [ye] that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28

“But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 19:14
