“Serve the LORD with gladness! Come into his presence with singing!” Psalm 100:2 ESV

I find that when I’m down I can be refreshed by doing something for someone else.

I spent a number of years as a single parent of one.

Many of those were before I was a believer so Christmas didn’t mean much to me other than giving gifts.

After I became a believer I was still a single parent of one but wanted to celebrate. I spent some Christmas days with fellow believers. I spent some alone with my daughter. The ones I enjoyed the most were spent serving others and I could often do it with my daughter.

There are many ways of serving others.

You can invite other singles for dinner.
Deliver meals to shut-ins, or people without family nearby.
Bake cookies, or bread, or any treat that you can take to your neighbors and friends.
Do you know someone with a big family who is hosting Christmas dinner? Offer to make part of the meal or help them clean and decorate or wrap gifts.
Offer to watch someone’s children so they can shop alone. Or offer to shop for them.

Most people would be glad for an extra set of hands around the holidays.

Getting the focus off myself really helps me see the Lord’s goodness in every situation.

“Then shall the young women rejoice in the dance, and the young men and the old shall be merry. I will turn their mourning into joy; I will comfort them, and give them gladness for sorrow.” Jer 31:13 ESV
