Over the holidays you will no doubt have opportunities to talk with people who don’t have the same opinion as you do, or just rub you the wrong way, or are difficult for you to be around.
Another thing that happens is there is a lot of opportunity for small talk.
Both of these situations can give us opportunities to say things we shouldn’t.
I would guess that most of us have heard someone say, “If you can’t say something good, don’t say anything at all.”
In fact the Lord tells us in His Word that we will have to give account for every careless word.
“I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak,”Matt 12: 36
As a fairly new Christian I was blessed when I got involved with a group of women who took a strong stand against gossip, and choose to only say good things about their husbands. I was corrected – privately – several times as I struggled to build these two habits into my life.
“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” Eph 4:29 NIV
Please join me during the holidays in praying that the Lord will set a guard over our mouths.
Lets focus on saying only good things about our loved ones and extended family.
“Set a guard, O LORD, over my mouth; Keep watch over the door of my lips.”Psa 141:3 NKJV
