Reflections on Daddy Staying Home

 Building Memorials

One of our favorite books when our children were growing up was “The Day Daddy Stayed Home” by Ethel and Leonard Kessler. It was because our daughter saw it come to life one snowy day.

“And Joshua said unto them, Pass over before the ark of the LORD your God into the midst of Jordan, and take ye up every man of you a stone upon his shoulder, according unto the number of the tribes of the children of Israel: That this may be a sign among you, [that] when your children ask [their fathers] in time to come, saying, What [mean] ye by these stones ” Then ye shall answer them, That the waters of Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD; when it passed over Jordan, the waters of Jordan were cut off: and these stones shall be for a memorial unto the children of Israel forever.” – Joshua 4:5-7 KJV

One of our favorite books when our children were growing up was “The Day Daddy Stayed Home” by Ethel and Leonard Kessler. It was because our daughter saw it come to life one snowy day. Daddy was home and it was snowing. So she ran out with her book saying, “Snowing, snowing, snowing, Papa stays home!” She called Dan Papa then so she substituted her name for him, but it was clear that our toddler had put together the books premise and the fact that it was snowing and her Papa was home.

That was many years ago, but on Presidents day this year Papa was home and it was really snowing. Our girls were still in bed and the thought came to me that it would be so much fun to resurrect that book and that memory. Thankfully it was right where I thought it was and I took it to Dan and suggested he go read it to them.

My son was up and is a camera buff so I said, “Dad’s making a memory, better grab your camera.” So off he went and we captured the memory of Dan reading that special book to them again.

Don’t memories do a momma’s heart good?

This reminded me of another photo opp. In January 2005 we were visiting Dan’s parents in Arizona. His father found a photo of our kids from our visit there in 1993, taken at one of our favorite parks. It brought back such good memories and we decided to go back and try to find the same spot and take another photo of our children there. Here are the results:

And so, another memory was made for this momma to share with her family.

Like Joshua and the children of Israel, we tend to forget, so we need reminders of the God times.
