We were so blessed this weekend to have our former pastor and his wife stay with us while they taught a marriage seminar at our current church. We’ve know them for about 19 years. They’ve been with through some of the most difficult times of our lives, including our marriage struggles and our son’s leukemia, so they know us well.
We had a delightful time with a leisurely dinner, lots of “catching-up” conversation, and some great laughs. I was reminded of the preciousness of long term friendships. Yes, we’ve made new friends since our move here three years ago, but they just can’t replace the friends who have stood by us over the long haul. Yet, it is often necessary for us to move on when the Lord chooses to change our earthy location.
When Pastor Berube talked about our move during one of his teachings, he said Dan was being “mangled” by his previous job, and as much as they hated letting us go he knew that this move would enable Dan to have a much more normal job which then would help him to fulfill the vision he had for a more balanced family life. Pastor Berube talked about “stumbling forward in the right direction”, and I think that describes so completely what most of us do in our Christian walk – at least it gives me a word picture of what we’ve done in our walk.
We have seldom heard the clear voice of God telling us to “walk this way”, or “do this now”, rather it’s often-times been a slow process of feeling our way – sometimes in the darkness – sometimes with just enough light to see the next step, but nevertheless “stumbling forward in the right direction” while listening for that still, small voice of God to reassure us that we are indeed going His way.
I King 11:12-13 says, “And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the Lord. And, behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the Lord was not in the earthquake:
And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.”
Thank you for joining me in the journey, as I stumble along – hopefully in the right direction – listening for that still small voice.
