The Key to Great Conversations

The Key to Great Conversations. My husband is a great conversationalist. His secret? He actually talks very little, but he listens well and knows how to ask great questions.

My husband is a great conversationalist. His secret? He actually talks very little, but he listens well and knows how to ask great questions.

We’ve used this to our advantage during our planning weekends that we’ve written about in our book “Purposeful Planning”.

I was recently asked for some of the questions we’ve used with our children during our conversations with them, so I’m including a list here.

How would your sister (brother) describe you to someone who has never seen you?

In five years, what kind of person would you like to be?

In ten years, what kind of person would you like to be?

What do you want to be doing in five years?

What do you want to be doing in ten years?

What are your favorite subjects in school?

When you have an hour of free time, what do you like to do?
Who would you do it with?

What is your favorite thing about your mom?

What is your favorite thing about your dad?

What is your favorite thing about yourself?

What is your favorite thing about our family?

If you could change one thing about our family, what would it be?

What do you consider the most important event of your life so far?

Who has had the most influence on you?

What do you consider your greatest achievement?

What is your greatest regret?

When was the time you were the most frightened?

If you could change one thing from your past, what would it be, and why?

What is your best memory?

What is your greatest fear?

What is your worst memory?

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

What do you dream about doing, becoming, or participating in?

What are some of the things you think we are doing well as a family?

Why not have a great conversation with someone you love this week – perhaps you could use one or two of our questions.

Great questions, Phyllis! Typically, I put my daughter to bed and we do a devotion together and my husband puts the boys to bed. He asked me last night to help him look for something “meaningful” that he could talk with the boys about during that time, like character qualities, manners, etc. I think I’ll give him your list of questions to start with!
