Come, My Soul, Thy Suit Prepare (John Newton – Olney Hymns)

Our pastor used this hymn as a part of a teaching he did on 7 Points for a Powerful Prayer Life a few weeks ago.

As I’ve read his teaching over during my quiet times these past few weeks, I’ve begun to love this old hymn. I had never heard it before but the words are so encouraging that I wanted to share them with you.

1 COME, my soul, thy suit prepare, Jesus loves to answer prayer; He himself has bid thee pray, Therefore will not say thee nay.

2 Thou art coming to a King, Large petitions with thee bring; For his grace and power are such, None can ever ask too much.

3 With my burden I begin, Lord, remove this load of sin! Let thy blood for sinners spilt, Set my conscience free from guilt.

4 Lord, I come to thee for rest, Take possession of my breast; There thy blood-bought right maintain, And without a rival reign.

5 As the image in the glass Answers the beholder’s face; Thus unto my heart appear, Print thine own resemblance there.

6 While I am a pilgrim here, Let thy love my spirit cheer; As my guide, my guard, my friend, Lead me to my journey’s end.

As you can see I’ve highlighted the second verse. I’ve been trying to wrap my mind about those words. As I’ve prayed I’ve tried to ask for bigger things – NONE can ever ask too much! Difficult words to grasp, but what possibilities they hold if they are indeed true.

• We pray to God as our Father
• Prayer is dependence
• The Spirit helps us as we pray
• Prayer is participation with Jesus in His work in the world
• Corporate prayer is being family together
