And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ. Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ. Colossians 3:23-24
Our dog, Strider, never does anything half-way. He lives this verse totally – whatever he is doing he puts his entire being into it.
As I was watching him retrieve a tennis ball this afternoon, I marveled at how many times he would race for the thrown ball, then race back to my son Eric. He never seems to tire of obeying his master. Treats help, but we don’t give him treats every time he retrieves – only sometimes. He never knows if this will be the time there is a treat or not. Still, he returns as fast as he possibly can.

Whatsoever ye do,…
Watching him made me question the way I live out this verse in my walk with the Lord. How do I respond when the Lord asks me to do something? Do I respond quickly, heartily, with my whole being? Or do I grumble and complain before doing a half-hearted job? Do I check to see if there might be a “treat” before I decide to obey?
All too often I’m afraid I find myself in the last category – grumbling, complaining, and checking to see what’s in it for me.
As wives and mothers we have all kinds of opportunities to serve the Lord – daily – in big and little ways. Lord, help us to keep our eyes on You and serve with our whole hearts, without looking for rewards. After all, even when there aren’t immediate visible rewards, there are always eternal ones.

Phyllis,
Thank you so much I needed to read this this morning. Again, that scripture came in God’s perfect timing. I love how you can read a scripture a million times and yet when you need it the most, it feels like you are reading it for the first time.
You also have been blessed with an awesome annointing that comes out through your writing. I look forward to reading your articles every morning. Some of them more than once.
Thank you for your obediance to our Lord and Savior. He loves to use those that are willing.
God Bless,
JEN
Phyllis,
What an awesome analogy.
I know in my life, I have really had to work on attitude. I’m really a “what’s in if for me” kinda gal!
I still struggle in a lot of areas – especially keeping my house clean. (yuk!)
Thanks for reminding me that I need to “do everything as unto the Lord.”
