As a homeschool mother I’m always on the lookout for practical projects that I can do with our children that teach them that giving of themselves, their time and their money are not just things that parents do, but things that we all can do even at a young age.
I recently discovered Randy Alcorn’s website page titled Hands-on Projects You Can Do.
Some of his ideas are:
Pack Hygiene Kits for Needy Children in the Philippines
They list what you need to put into it, how to pack it, and where to send it.
You could even do a brief study of the Philippines or just discuss them as you pack your kits.
Fill Paper Bags for the Homeless
They have great ideas for what to put in these. I would add a gift certificate from a fast food restaurant so they could get a hot meal or coffee– especially if you live in a state like MN where it can get really cold. A cold drink on a hot day would also be a real treat.
Take the 5 minute challenge from Open Doors
Commit 5 minutes a week to pray for each (or pick a different one each week) country on their World Watch List for persecution. Once again this could include a brief study on the country and why their people are being persecuted.
In addition to the things on the above page we’ve delivered Meals on Wheels together and spent time helping at a local food shelf.
What ideas have you had to involve your children in community projects? Why not share so we can all benefit.

That’s what I liked about them – you can use them with younger children but it is also something an older child could be given more responsibility for – like earning the money to purchase the necessary items.

Thanks for the ideas. My daughter just turned five and I was wanting to get some projects like this for her for the summer.

Thanks so much for linking up. These are great ideas. I’m toying around with doing some sort of service project with our VBS kids this summer. Kids always seem to understand when they’re doing something tangible.

Phyllis, those are GREAT ideas…I love teaching our children to be thinking of how to bless others…to be the hands and feet of Jesus reaching out to the lost and oppressed! Thanks for sharing this on What Joy Is Mine link-up today!
