Can God trust you with sorrow,
With anguish, and with pain,
Or would your faith soon falter
And faint beneath the strain? Nicholson
When I read this poem earlier this week I was struck by the first line, “Can God trust you with sorrow, with anguish, and with pain”. At first it seemed to be an odd question, but as I pondered it I was led to examine myself more closely.
What is my attitude when I’m walking in one of life’s more difficult places? Do I only praise the Lord when things are going well, or am I able to thank Him for what He is doing during the hard times as well – the times of sorrow, anguish, and pain?
I recently read about a pastor who had a new convert come to him and say, “Why me?” The pastor thought, oh no, he’s going to be another complaining Christian, but the man surprised him by saying, “Why me? Out of all the people in this world, why would the Lord choose me to save me?”
What a wonderful attitude. I must confess, I have never said “Why me?” when things are going well – much less about why the Lord would choose to save someone like me. But I certainly have said it a number of times when I was being tested or “trusted” with sorrow, anguish, or pain.
But, I’ve purposed to give it a try. Will you join me? The next time you are blessed, ask the Lord, “Why me?” “Why would the God of the universe choose to bless someone like me?” And the next time you are faced with a difficult situation, join me in saying, “Thank you, Lord, for trusting me to be faithful in this hard place. Give me the strength and grace to be a blessing to You.”

Thanks for the realignment!
I was reminded of a quote from Mother Theresa – God never gives us more than we can handle – I just wish He didn’t trust me so much!!
But it is a good reminder to keep our focus on Him during these times – it is only in Him we can handle anything.
Enjoy your week Phyllis!

Great article, Phyllis! We can all use this kind of reminder!
