Try Adding But God… to your circumstance
As a homeschool mom, one of the things I’ve always told my children is to “Watch out for the ‘buts’ when we study God’s word.”
This was always good for a laugh when they were younger.
Recently I was reminded of this again when a speaker I was listening to said the same thing, “Watch out for the ‘buts’ when you’re reading God’s Word.”
What are the “buts”? Here is a sampling from 1 Peter chapter 2:
- …disallowed indeed of men BUT chosen of God and precious.1 Peter 2:4
- BUT ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should show forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.1 Peter 2: 9
- Which in time past were not a people, BUT are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, BUT now have obtained mercy?1 Peter 2:10
- For what glory is it, if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? BUT if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God.1 Peter 2: 20
- Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; BUT committed himself to him that judgeth righteously:1 Peter 2:23
- For ye were as sheep going astray; BUT are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.1 Peter 2:25
Try adding But God… to your circumstance
The contrasts here are amazing! As I wrote I was reminded of the BUT in one of my favorite childhood songs;
Jesus loves me! This I know,
For the Bible tells me so.
Little ones to Him belong;
They are weak, but He is strong.
Refrain
Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me!
The Bible tells me so.
Jesus loves me! This I know,
As He loved so long ago,
Taking children on His knee,
Saying, “Let them come to Me.”
Refrain
Jesus loves me still today,
Walking with me on my way,
Wanting as a friend to give
Light and love to all who live.
Refrain
Jesus loves me! He who died
Heaven’s gate to open wide;
He will wash away my sin,
Let His little child come in.
Refrain
Jesus loves me! He will stay
Close beside me all the way;
Thou hast bled and died for me,
I will henceforth live for Thee.
Refrain
This was originally posted in 2007, but I found it encouraging in light of all that is happening in today’s world.
Don’t forget: God’s got this!
[Pro 21:1 ESV] 1 The king’s heart is a stream of water in the hand of the LORD; he turns it wherever he will.
[Rom 8:35 ESV] 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword?

Thank you Jen and Cathy,
Your notes are so encouraging. It certainly is good to look with child-like faith again.
In Him, Phyllis
Thank you so much Phyllis. This just made me look at Jesus through child like eyes again.
God Bless you and your family,
JEN
Oh Phyllis,
You are doing a wonderful job writing on your site. This post was a blessed reminder that we are His chosen and loved.
Keep up the beautiful work that you are doing.
In His Love,
