Plans or Miracles

Plans or Miracles. I’ve learned that there is not better gap-filler-upper than the Lord. I’ve learned to plan, but to allow for the Lord’s intervention. I’m sure you’ve heard the saying, “Being a parent will keep you humble.” Well being a homeschool parent will keep you humble and on your knees – but there is no better place to be. #plans #miracles #prayers

We have no more than five loaves and two fishes; except we should go and buy food for all this people. Luke 9:13

“When Jesus said, “Give ye them to eat,” it was not because he expected his disciples to have a plan, but because he wanted them to expect a miracle.” Watchman Nee in A Table in the Wilderness

[Tweet ““When Jesus said, “Give ye them to eat,” it was not because he expected his disciples to have a plan, but because he wanted them to expect a miracle.” Watchman Nee in A Table in the Wilderness”]

This is an appropriate message as we set about preparing our children and ourselves for another school year. I’ve spent several days knee-deep in lesson plans and schedules this week. I’ve also talked with several homeschool moms who are also working to pull their plans and schedules together for that all-important “first day of school”.

This is our 15th year of homeschooling, so hopefully I’ve learned a little about preparing. We do have a system that we’ve landed on that has worked for us as a family for the past several years. We continue to make minor adjustments, but for the most part it hasn’t changed drastically for some time. We still need to decide who will study what when – which continues to be challenging, especially now that our daughters will be taking some college courses.

But having a plan doesn’t make me immune to the “what if’s” that all homeschool parents face at one time or another. What if we have gaps? What if we fail to teach them enough? Or well enough? What if they can’t pass the SAT? What if they don’t have any friends? What if I just don’t do this right? What if… The list goes on and on.

This is where this parable can be helpful to us. As homeschool parents we do need to prayerfully seek the Lord about His plan for our children. We need to be faithful to follow that plan and train our children carefully. We have to schedule and plan as if it all depended on us. But then, we need to put it in the Lord’s hands. I’ve often said, “I need to do my best, and the Lord will do the rest.”

When we’re on our knees we have to look up, and when we look up we see Jesus. So, look to Jesus, do what you can, and then expect a miracle.

    Phyllis,

This is a wonderful reminder for those of us who LOVE to plan. We must take our plans to the throne room for approval and adjustments!

    Love,
    Maridel

AMEN Phyllis!! This is so excellent! I cannot count all the times God heard and answered prayers for wisdom to teach Algebra, or for friends or for peace in our homes or for extra income at just the right time to buy a different spelling book or ??? (and even once He amazingly answered an Algebra prayer with a brand new, popular and expensive curriculum for FREE!) We serve an amazing God, Phyllis, and I thank you for pointing us back to Him
    Love Deanne
