The Way to a Man’s Heart

The secret is out! There is some truth to the proverb, “The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.”

The secret is out! There is some truth to the proverb, “The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.”

When I first met my future husband and considered cooking him a meal, I remember bemoaning the fact that the only things I knew how to cook had tomato sauce in them – spaghetti, lasagna, pizza, sloppy joes, and the like.

I later learned that he loves anything covered with tomato sauce or ketchup! What a match! We also joked that he had a newer car and I had furniture, once again, no duplicates, but just what we needed.

I did have one specialty in my cooking repertoire – caramel-filled brownies. I remember making a pan and putting some on a plate to leave on his apartment deck where he enjoyed hanging out. They quickly became his favorite, and I was well on the way to winning my man’s heart.

I joke about this, but I do know that those brownies got his attention and made him stop to take a longer look at the cook behind the brownies.

I didn’t know that he would someday be my husband; I was just being friendly to my new neighbors.  I find it interesting that the Lord used something so simple to get him interested in finding out more about me.

July 7th we will celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary – no small feat in today’s world. We are going away for a couple of days together to celebrate and thank the Lord for helping us during all these years. We know we couldn’t have done it without Him.

The moral of this story is, you just never know when a small kindness will reap big rewards – and be sure to teach your daughters how to cook.

For all of you who wrote me for the correct recipe it has been corrected. I’ll post it here in the comments too so its easier to copy.

    Caramel Chocolate Squares

    1-14 oz. bag of caramels
    2/3 cup of evaporated milk
    1 pkg. chocolate cake mix
¾ cup melted butter or margarine
1 pkg. chocolate chips – as few or as many as you would like – we like a lot!

Combine caramels and 1/3 cup evaporated milk in pan. Cook slowly until melted, keep warm.

Combine cake mix, butter and 1/3 cup evaporated milk in bowl. Beat with mixer at medium speed for 2 minutes.

Spread half the batter in greased 13 X 9 X 2 pan. Bake for 6 minutes at 350 degrees. Sprinkle with chocolate chips, pour on caramel mixture. Drop remaining cake mixture on by spoonfuls. Bake for 18 minutes.

    Enjoy! Phyllis
