MCWG Spring Writer’s Conference

Words – so innocent and powerless as they are, as standing in a dictionary, how potent for good and evil they become in the hands of one who knows how to combine them. ~Nathaniel Hawthorne

Hello all my fellow writers and friends,

My daughters and I were blessed on Saturday to be able to attend the Minnesota Christian Writer’s Guild’s spring conference where Jim Watson was the speaker. He is a much-published author and a gifted speaker.

In addition to learning more about the craft of writing, we were encouraged to use our gifts to bring the good news of Jesus to others and to glorify the Lord in all we write.

Jim has a great sense of humor and is a gifted story teller, so the sessions flew by and before we knew it we were on our way home with a renewed sense of urgency to write the things the Lord has put on our hearts.

If you are a writer, or even a wannabe writer, I would encourage you to consider attending a local writers’ seminar. There are many that are readily available in most areas – just Google your area to see if there is one close by. We drive about 100 miles to these, but it is well worth the time and effort to it takes to participate.

One of the main things it has done for us is to validate writing as a legitimate call or vocation. I think my daughters especially have been confronted with the attitude that all young girls write, but it’s a phase they grow out of – what are you really going to do with your life? They are 21 and 23 and have been writing for several years. Emily, the oldest, just sold a short story that will soon be published, which has caused a great stir of excitement in our house. No, she won’t get rich off this one short story, but it does encourage all of us to continue diligently to work on doing what we feel the Lord is calling us to in spite of opposition.

As a homeschool family, I guess we are somewhat used to taking different roads than most, but I know attending writing seminars has helped us “come out” so to speak, and stand a bit taller when we are asked what we are doing.

…whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God. 1 Corinthians 10:31b
