Continuing Education for Wives and Mothers

Continuing Education for Wives and Mothers

The first week in May finds us in Rochester where for the past 20 years my husband has attended a week long seminar to update him on information for his career. It’s been time well spent as he doesn’t usually get too much time to keep up on his own; and this is a well- run seminar that makes the most of the time he has to get up-to-date in many areas. Since the class times are usually shorter than his work days we also get some prime family time too so it’s a win/win week and one we all look forward to.

Recently I’ve come to the conclusion that wives and mothers need to have some continuing education for their chosen careers – mainly being Godly wives and mothers.

@Lori Laws

We are constantly swimming against the flow of our modern, liberal society that looks down on our careers as a waste of time and talents or something they can’t imagine doing without being totally bored to death.

We need to be reading and hearing material that reminds us that our career choices are the best and most important ones we could make. Being a Godly wife and caring for the spouse the Lord has given us is truly a blessing. Having the opportunity to parent and train our children to be followers of the Lord is a huge blessing, but also a big responsibility.

I’m not trying to put another burden on already overwhelmed wives and mothers; but I do want to suggest some ways you can continue to grow as a Godly wife and mother.

First, be sure you are feeding yourself on God’s Word daily. I know I just said I wasn’t going to burden you, but this is not a burden. This will actually lighten your burden as you fellowship with the Lord and feed on His Word.

He doesn’t expect you to do this alone. He expects you do to it with Him.

Mat 11:28-30 KJV – “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30

Second, learn and listen to Godly women who have gone before you.

“The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.” Titus 2:3-5 KJV

I know with how busy women are today that finding a good mentor is difficult to find. Having someone in your church would be ideal, but the ideal isn’t always possible.

I’ve found that online I am continually amazed at the relatively young women who are sharing much of their wisdom as Godly wives and mothers. These are no-nonsense ladies who call us to turn from the lies of the world that would drag us down and follow the Word of the Lord.

As with any resource, internet or otherwise, you need to run every teaching through the teaching of the Bible.

“That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;” Ephesians 4:14 KJV

“For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” Hebrew 4:12 KJV

Or as a pastor of ours said – “Eat the meat and spit out the bones.” To do this you must saturate your mind with the Word of God at every opportunity.

With that in mind, I’m going to share a couple of links with you to articles from women I’ve chosen as my online mentors, many of whom are much younger than I am, but have availed themselves of the Word and applied it to their lives so that they are able to teach others.

Knowing that a lot of you are still in the training phase of parenting I decided to include this article from Kathie Morrissey from The Character Corner on first time obedience.

The second link I want to post is from someone I’ve started following recently. Erin of Keeper of the Homestead is doing a series on how to clean your house – room by room. She is also making videos to show the process.

Since I know many of you are struggling to raise and train young children, possibly homeschooling some of them, and keep your home tidy I thought you might find these simple steps helpful.

I’ll stop there, and pick this up in another post. Please ask me questions or share a parenting or homemaking tips in the comments so we can all grow and learn.
