Surviving the Holidays And a Free Holiday Planner

Surviving the Holidays

Ready or not, here come the holidays.

I look forward to them with some anxiety and concern.

You are probably like me in that not everyone in your family gets along or you have someone who is never very pleasant to be with.

These busy times can be very heard on families and marriages. I was going to write a post on four ways to build up your marriage during this season, but I decided to post about one way each week. I invite you to work with me on each area for one week. Hopefully we will put some new habits in our homes that will help us grow stronger marriages and families together.

Simple but Successful

A few years ago we had several couples from our church over for the evening. It was a laid back time with lots of chatting, playing some games, and of course, having some snacks.

As the evening was winding up, one man said, “It’s just so peaceful here.”

Wow! For me that was high praise.

I had been working on making our home a haven for my husband. He had a high pressure job and worked long hours, so I wanted him to come home to a place where he could just relax in and feel the peace of the Lord.

That wasn’t always easy with three children under five, and the youngest with leukemia.

I encouraged the children to work with me to prepare for Dad’s homecoming. They loved being with their Dad so it was easy to get them excited to prepare our home for his arrival.

  • We picked up toys and made things neat.
  • Got dinner going, and set the table.
  • Everyone wanted things to be nice for Dad’s arrival.

Were our evenings always quiet and peaceful? Definitely not, but they were more peaceful than if we weren’t trying. There were still difficult things to talk about or work out, but I tried not to meet him at the door with problems. I discuss some of how we deal with that in the article, What Foundation Are You Building On?

Ready to work on having a peaceful home?

What are some of your ideas?

“Better to live on a corner of the roof than share a house with a quarrelsome wife.” Proverbs 21:9

Here is something that will help you have a more peaceful home, and it’s free!

    Hi Phyllis
I hear us about the crazy Christmas season. I think it helps to have things planned like who does what chores from dishes to cleaning. There are no agruements I just point them to the roster . Ah peace.

I agree totally. My children are all young adults and we still have the work divided so we know who does what. Although these days they’re more apt to finish part of my work rather than me finishing their work.
